School Nurse Helps Enraged Parents and Health Department Overcome Head Lice Problems

Gulf County, Florida: Regina Washabaugh is a registered nurse who works with a Gulf County, Florida school with 610 students. Like many schools across the country, Nurse Regina has had frequent head lice infestations and an awful time helping students get rid of the problem.

"We usually suggested parents use Nix or Rid, two common products. But they didn't work so well and many parents blamed us nurses," Regina said. "In some cases, the parent's anger was so bad that I was concerned for the security of my health aide when she faced the angry parents alone."

While attending the Florida State School Nurse Conference last May, Regina learned that lice had developed a resistance to the most commonly used products. "When I learned that, the light bulb went on! For example, I had a long haired high school honor student who was covered with lice. She literally screamed at me because she had used Nix every week and was unable to get rid of the lice," she recalled.

Nurse Regina says that school nurses must change their approach. "It is essential to treat the entire school and, if necessary, entire families all on the same day.
