Why Mosquitoes Like You
(and, how to get then to dislike
you)
Did you know that the term
mosquito repellent" is a misnomer? They are not really "repelled" by
anything, rather, a 'repellent' masks the attractants on your body so that
mosquitoes have a difficult time finding you because their senses are
affected by the repellent. And, of course, repellents do not kill
mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes don't have a
sense of smell - rather they can sense us from as far as 50 yards away.
They are attracted to the Carbon Dioxide that we release when breathing
and the lactic acid in our sweat. The less you sweat, the fewer bites
you'll get. They are also attracted by various soaps, skin lotions,
deodorants and cosmetics.
Essential oils do a great
job of masking these attractants which is why Buzz Away is so effective at
repelling mosquitoes. Buzz Away contains the oils of Eucalyptus,
Lemongrass, Citronella, Cedarwood and Peppermint.

Kiss Your Cold Sore Goodbye
-
The War on Herpes
The war on herpes has raged
for centuries. In the first
century A.D., Tiberius, Emperor of Rome, actually banned kissing to combat
a herpes epidemic. Now, new
research is providing successful treatment alternatives.
One such alternative is the
amino acid l-lysine. Studies
show that it can be effective as a dietary supplement, and when applied
topically. In a study published in Phytomedicine (2000), bee propolis
applied topically was also shown to be effective.
Both cold sores and genital
herpes have reached epidemic proportions in the
U.S. Since the late 1970s, the number
of people with genital herpes has increased by 30%. Currently, the leading OTC brand
and the leading prescription drug add up to $60 million in sales per year.

What is
Homeopathy?
"Homeo" means "like, and
"pathy" refers to a "pathology" or disease. This refers to the homeopathic
principle that "Like cures
like". If a patient is
suffering from symptoms (for example) similar to poisoning by mercury, he
will take vastly diluted mercury as a treatment. Many homeopathic remedies are
highly diluted, often as much as 1 trillion to one.
These
diluted, natural substances work a little like a vaccine. They stimulate the body's immune
response. Homeopathy's aim is
to cure, rather than to control symptoms. "We want the complete restoration
of perfect health," said Dr. Samuel Hahneman, the founding father of
homeopathy.
Letter to the
Editor
Dear
Quantum,
I'm worried about
protecting my eyesight. Both
of my parents suffered from macular degeneration. What can I do to keep my vision in
good shape?
It's important to visit an
optometrist regularly. New
equipment helps diagnose eye problems. Macular degeneration
involves loss of function in the light receptors in the central
retina. It is the leading
cause of blindness in
America. There is no good treatment for it,
but recent research shows that dietary supplements can reduce the risk of
the disease, and slow its progress.
In one study, Vitamins A, C, and E along with Zinc reduced the risk
of macular degeneration over a seven year period. Carotenoids like Lutein are also
important. Fortunately, these
nutrients may also protect against cataracts.
