What Vitamins Are Good For Preventing Cold Sores?

Text from the video; Dentist Dr. Christopher Kammer: Preventing Cold Sores According to the Center for Disease Control, 17% of adult Americans test positive for the Virus that causes genital herpes, and fully 80% test positive for Herpes Simplex 1, which causes cold sores. Although 80% of adults test positive for the herpes simplex 1 virus, only about 25% develop cold sores.  Why is it that some people who have the virus get the disease, while others do not? Nobody knows for certain. A healthy immune system probably helps keep the virus from breaking out.  In addition, our diets may protect against herpes outbreaks. Experts believe that a diet rich in the amino acid l-lysine and low in arginine may help prevent herpes outbreaks. Adding immune-supporting nutrients may help strengthen the immune response to keep the virus in check. Foods that are rich in lysine and low in arginine include:

  • dairy products (especially fermented dairy products like cheese or yogurt)
  • fish
  • meat,
  • soybeans and brewer’s yeast.

Foods that are rich in arginine, and should be avoided, include:

  • nuts
  • seeds
  • grains (like wheat and oats)
  • chocolate and 'jello'

Many herpes and cold sore sufferers can reduce the frequency or severity of outbreaks by watching what they eat. Or they can take the easy way out, and supplement their diet with products like Lysine+ tablets, available at most Health Food and Drug stores.
